Custom store, Shopify or WooCommerce?
There are three honest ways to sell online in the UAE, and the right one depends on your catalogue and how much you want to own.
| Shopify | WooCommerce | Custom store | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Low | Medium | Higher |
| Monthly cost | Plan + apps + fees | Hosting + plugins | Hosting only |
| Design freedom | Theme limits | Good | Complete |
| Speed | Good | Depends on build | Excellent |
| You own it | No | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Testing a product | Large catalogues on a budget | Brands scaling, unusual flows |
If you are testing whether a product sells, Shopify is fine and this page is not for you yet. If you already sell, your app bill keeps climbing and your store looks like everyone else's, a custom build or a lean WooCommerce store is where the margin comes back.
What a custom store includes
A custom store is not a stripped-down shop. The standard build covers everything a growing brand needs from day one:
- Catalogue with categories, variants (size, colour), stock per variant, "new" and sale badges, and fast filtering.
- Checkout on Stripe with cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, or on UAE gateways like Ziina, Tap or Network International. Multi-currency display (AED/USD) where you sell abroad.
- Customer accounts with Google sign-in, saved addresses, order history and wishlists.
- Branded transactional email for order confirmation, shipping and password reset, designed to match the site.
- PDF receipts and invoices generated on every order.
- WhatsApp alerts to your phone for every new order, so nothing sits unseen.
- Admin dashboard with revenue, orders, top products and traffic sources, plus order management and refunds.
What is included
Moving from WooCommerce or Shopify
Migrations are where stores lose money if they are rushed: broken product URLs, lost customer accounts, and six months of rankings gone overnight. A migration here includes:
- Products, variants, images and descriptions imported by script, not by hand.
- Customers and order history carried over, so repeat buyers keep their accounts.
- A full 301 redirect map from every old product and category URL to its new home.
- A parallel run on staging until the numbers match, then a switch timed outside your busiest hours.
A streetwear brand made exactly this move from WooCommerce to a custom store, with its full order history migrated and the new checkout, email and alert system live from the first day.
Security and payments done properly
Card data never touches your server: payments run through the gateway's hosted fields, which keeps you out of PCI scope. On top of that, every store gets hardened sessions, CSRF protection on every form, rate-limited login, prepared database statements and a security review before launch. Admin access is role-based, so staff who pack orders do not see revenue reports.
If you are not VAT-registered yet, prices and receipts are set up without VAT, and switching it on later is a setting, not a rebuild.
